Scouting report: Mount Vernon vs. CBA

Education Sport Entry No Comments »

This is the second of three scouting reports for this weeks state semifinals up in Glens Falls. If you missed my look at Tuckahoe-Mechanicville, you can find it here.

No team has ever left Glens Falls with more state championship plaques than Mount Vernons nine, but the Knights face a program well versed in how to slay a giant. CBA upset defending state champ Newburgh two seasons ago, beating a loaded Half Hollow Hills West team along the way.

CBA and Mount Vernon have actually met two times previously in the state semifinals. Both were won by Mount Vernon, but not without CBA leaving the Knights with something to remember. The Brothers challenged Mount Vernons vaunted 2004 Federation champions, dictating the pace in a 52-49 thriller.

Heres a look at the matchup, including thoughts from both coaches, which I posted after the scouting report.

GLADSTONE — As post commander, she’s responsible for allocating the resources for Michigan State Police services in Menominee and Delta County.

First Lieutenant Karen McCormack is retiring after 25 years with the State Police.

Her last day is February 29.

McCormack started out as a trooper in 1987.

“There’re so many people that I’ve met along the way and have been able to assist,” explains McCormack. “You just hope in some small way that you’ve made life better for the people in the Upper Peninsula.”

And she has.

There are many memories she’d rather forget, like heinous crimes and the aftermath of terrible accidents.

Instead, she says she’ll remember the better times.

She really enjoyed improving the lives of children who were crime victims.

A post commander’s top priority is public safety.

“It’s also very important for me to know that I’ve been able to hold accountable those people that have done something criminal or victimized another human being. That’s reward

S.F. elementary schools falling short on exercise

Many of San Francisco’s public elementary schools aren’t scheduling as much time as they should for student exercise, according to a new UCSF study to be announced today.

Part of the problem is that while middle and high schools can require students to take a certain number of physical education classes, elementary schools don’t have such scheduled periods. State budget cuts and pressure to raise test scores have also pushed physical education down the priority list, teachers told researchers.

In response to the report, San Francisco Unified School District officials said Wednesday they plan to hire four additional P.E. specialists for the city’s 73 elementary schools, bringing the total number to 19.

“Ideally we would love to be able to have a dedicated P.E. teacher for each school,” said district spokeswoman Gentle Blythe.

Wednesday notes: Clarke, Paschall set to return

A have a bunch of notes to share from local basketball and nothing but space to share them.

Most have been posted on Twitter (which is why you should join my crew of 2,000 strong and follow me), but here are a few nuggets Ive acquired in recent days:

• New Rochelle junior Joe Clarke (left) will play on Friday against Mamaroneck. This is according to Bill Murphy, whose team played without its leading scorer and rebounder last Friday in a loss at Mount Vernon. After that game, Murphy had been uncertain whether Clarke would play in the playoffs.

• Dobbs Ferry sophomore Eric Paschall returned to practice after missing last weeks season finale with a sore knee. The Eagles nearly lost to rival Irvington, hastening the need for Paschalls return. Coach Scott Patrillo said Paschall participated in a full scrimmage Monday and a full practice Tuesday.

Even if Paschall needs rest, the schedule works in his favor. Sinc
