A bit of surprising news tonight: Dobbs Ferry junior Eric Paschall has given his verbal commitment to Fordham University.

The 6-foot-6 swingman announced his commitment on his Twitter account Thursday night. It brought a sudden and somewhat abrupt end to the recruitment of the areas hottest prospect, a player who became just the fourth Section 1 player to earn the coveted Mr. Basketball prize this season and who, at 16, seemed to have almost endless options for his future.

Paschall earned all-section honors as a sophomore and helped New York-based The City win an AAU National Championship last summer. He returned to average a Section 1-best 26.0 points per game as well as 11.2 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game as a junior.

Before giving his verbal commitment, Paschall had already amassed 10 offers, many of them before the high school season began. They included: Fordham, West Virginia, Providence, Iona, Radford, George Mason, Northwestern, VCU, Quinnipiac, and Manhattan.

Former Oklahoma QB Steve Davis dead at 60

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — As a child, Steve Davis dreamed of playing for Oklahoma and even tucked away a picture of the Sooners’ quarterback he idolized in his dresser drawer.

Decades later, he is among the standard-bearers for the position at one of college football’s most storied programs. Davis, who started every game during Barry Switzer’s first three seasons as head coach and won national championships in 1974 and 1975, died Sunday in a plane crash in South Bend, Ind. He was 60.

Davis compiled a remarkable 32-1-1 record in three years as the Sooners’ starter. The Sooners went 11-0 in 1974, then won the national title again the following year after going 11-1.

It was a storybook career for Davis, who finished with one of the best records for a starting quarterback in the sport’s history after a humble beginning at Oklahoma.

High School Report: Klahowya finally plays at home

Perhaps the best indication of how little precipitation has fallen from the sky this spring could be found at Klahowya Secondary School.

If you showed up on Friday, you’d see an actual baseball game played on the field.

For the first time in two seasons, the Eagles hosted a ball game at the school. The notoriously poor draining field has been unplayable because of the wet springs.

The Eagles (1-1 overall, 1-0 league) made sure their fans saw a good game in a 2-1 win over the Port Angeles Roughriders in the Olympic League opener.

“First game at our field, new jerseys, a league win, it was a big day,” Klahowya coach Dan Zuber said.

Dillon Keefer threw a complete game, striking out six and walking one. He gave up one run on three hits.

He also had the game-winning hit in the eighth inning.

“It was a big day for him,” Zuber said.

Frosh steals home in ninth

Freshman Nigel Christian asked Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen if he could steal home, got the OK, and beat the throw at the plate to give the Wolves a 3-2 ninth-inning win over Port Townsend.

To go with a co-championship in the final regular-season standings in the Western Athletic Conference, the Denver Pioneers landed four players Monday on the all-conference team.

Junior forward Chris Udofia was named to the first team as well as to the conference’s all-defensive team. Udofia was second in the conference in blocked shots at 2.38 a game.

Senior Chris Hallam was named to the second team, and sophomores Brett Olson and Royce O’Neale were named to the third team.

Hallam, the only senior on the DU team, also was named to the all-defensive team. He had 62 steals for the season, ranking second in the WAC.
