University Notations No Comments »

So, your university exams are coming next Monday and you want to prepare for your exams but have no idea where to start? Well I have written this hub especially for you because recently I have been through this stage as well. Of course, I am writing this as I was able to prepare well using a few techniques which I am going to describe below.

Because the techniques I will be telling are completely logical and has worked effectively with me in all forms of my life. Since, the subject here is “how to prepare for exams”, I will limit my hub and describe these techniques in this context only.

Your progress in preparation of exams will depend upon the process you are executing. Confused?

What is a process? Why we require it?

In case of machines, a process can be defined as a mechanism which processes the inputs in such a way that a desired outcome is obtained.

Racial divide is higher education’s ‘dirty secret’

Mark Crawley, dean of students at the University of the Arts London (UAL), told the Race in the Creative Process event that the sector needed more discussion about the discrepancy in attainment between black and minority ethnic students.

“Higher education has a dirty little secret: white students get more firsts and 2:1s than black students – and no one even talks about it,” he said.

Detailed analysis of the figures made it clear that this applied even when differences in social class had been taken into account, he added.

“We don’t know why this is,” admitted Mr Crawley, “but we should certainly talk and disagree about it.”

The debate, which took place at the Chelsea College of Art and Design on 12 December, was organised by UAL’s Shades of Noir project, which aims to raise awareness of race issues in the art, design and communication industries.

Panellists were asked about how they dealt with their own unconscious biases, which parts of the “creative education process” should be “devoid of any race connections” and whether they saw a place for “positive discrimination”.

Excluded pupils find few opportunities outside mainstream state school

Thousands of pupils excluded from state schools are being deprived of the opportunity to gain qualifications that would help them build a future, according to children’s campaigners.

Permanent exclusion has always been the ultimate sanction for headteachers, subject to a final appeals process. Last year, there were 5,080 permanent exclusions from state schools. Since September, however, new legislation has made it much harder for parents and carers of excluded children to reverse a school’s decision or get it removed from a child’s records.

Many schools are reluctant to offer a place to a child who has been excluded from a nearby school as they have a duty to protect pupils from others who may be disruptive.

Animated future for UK universities

University Notations No Comments »

You might think higher education mission groups only get animated when they are scoring points at each other’s expense.

But the University Alliance of “business-engaged” universities is taking a novel approach, producing a cartoon envisaging four different scenarios for university futures, which it plans to use in lobbying politicians and around the country.

Libby Hackett, the University Alliance chief executive, says in her voiceover for the animation (in which she appears in cartoon form) that the piece is an attempt to “change the terms of the debate”.

The debate on higher education has so far focused on tuition fees and their impact on student numbers, with little discussion of the social and economic role of universities, she says.

The animation’s four scenarios for the future of universities are based on combinations of two variables: a high- or low-growth economy, and a collaborative or competitive society.

The first scenario, “Uni_Divide”, takes place in a contracting economy and competitive, consumerist society.
