WINCHESTER — A former middle school basketball coach on Tuesday admitted to engaging in sex acts with a 13-year-old girl and will spend the next year in the Randolph County Jail if a judge accepts the terms of a plea agreement.
Cassandra Lee Shaffer, 21, of rural Albany, entered guilty pleas to two counts of child molesting, both felonies carrying standard four-year prison terms, and child solicitation, a felony with a standard 18-month sentence, after striking the deal with prosecutors.
Senior Judge Joel Roberts took under advisement both Shaffer’s guilty pleas and the agreement, and tentatively set sentencing for Aug. 4.
Authorities said the girl attended Monroe Central Junior-Senior High School but was not a member of the seventh-grade team coached by Shaffer. The solicitation charge in part stemmed from text messages the defendant sent to the girl.
