Matt Hurlock, whose Coventry volleyball teams won seven state titles over the last eight years, died Wednesday of cancer. He was 39.

Hurlock took over the program in 2001 and by 2003, had won his first Class S state championship. Coventry hadn’t won any state titles in a girls sport since 1988.

He won his last title last fall, with a 3-0 victory over Morgan. He gave up his varsity boys basketball coaching job but decided to stick with volleyball, despite being exhausted from chemotherapy treatments.
