The biggest story of the day had to be the official return of the Winnipeg Jets. The team tried to wait until the draft, but word leaked out that the Jets were back prior to the draft. It was probably the right choice to get the old name back.

Last night I testified before the Primary and Secondary Finance Subcommittee regarding the proposed education budget, HB 153. I didn’t really delve into the funding side of the budget, because when there’s no money, there’s no money. You can argue how reductions should be made, but Ohio must balance its budget. No, I focused primarily on policy language in the budget bill.
I talked about the importance of effective instruction, how crucial it is to have quality educators not only in every classroom, but as principals in every school. My testimony spoke to raising expectations for every part of our K-12 system and getting serious about intervening in struggling (or worse, persistently failing) schools — something Ohio has been unable or unwilling do accomplish to any great extent. I said that I thought perhaps Ohio was finally going to move away from the one-size-fits-all, lockstep factory model of education that we know just doesn’t work. Read the full post…

A professional fundraiser charged with bilking a private school run by Roman Catholic nuns out of more than $360,000 pleaded guilty Monday and was sentenced to two years in prison.
Michael Hlady admitted stealing the money from Venerini Academy and misleading the school into believing that a well-known philanthropist was preparing to make a multimillion-dollar donation.
Investigators said the 37-year-old Greenville, R.I., resident used the money on travel, gambling, adult entertainment and other personal expenses.
Superior Court Judge James Lemire sentenced Hlady, who was arrested on March 2010, to two years in state prison and ordered him to make full restitution to the school.

CHICAGO (June 9, 2011) — In its 26th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Brianna Turgeon of Fitch High School as its 2010-11 Gatorade Connecticut Softball Player of the Year. Turgeon is the first Gatorade Softball Player of the Year to be chosen from Fitch High School.

In “Are You Smart Enough to Read ED.gov?” Mike Petrilli suggested that the content on ED.gov requires the most advanced reading levels of all websites in the federal government.
As all of us in education policy have learned over the past decade, it’s important to disaggregate data. When you slice the readability data across various sections of ed.gov, you see a significantly different story. The overall readability levels for ed.gov are driven higher by a large volume of research and statistics aimed at a specialized audience of researchers and policy analysts. However, the content designed to reach the general public scores significantly better on the Google readability scale than other federal websites.
