The Atrium Art Gallery at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College will be sponsoring Area Artists 2011, a biennial open juried exhibition open to visual artists who live or work in Androscoggin, Franklin, or Oxford counties. Artists may submit up to two works to be juried; there is no entry fee. Delivery dates are Friday, December 3, 10-4, and Saturday, December 4, 10-2, at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College, 51 Westminster Street in Lewiston. The biennial exhibition, which began in 1994, is sponsored by Spiller’s located on Memorial Street in Lisbon, offering a full line of art supplies.
All media will be considered from paintings, drawings, prints, and photography to works in clay, fiber, wood, metal, and other 3-dimensional media. Jurors for the exhibition are Carolyn Eyler and Anthony Shostak.
Carolyn Eyler is Director of Exhibitions and Programs for USM’s Portland and Gorham campuses. Her extensive curatorial projects include interdisciplinary artists and non-western subjects. Her degrees include a B.F.A. in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University and an M.A. in curatorial studies from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College in New York.
Anthony Shostak is Curator of Education for the Bates College Museum of Art. Born and raised in Lewiston, Shostak received a B.F.A. degree in painting and drawing from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has exhibited around the country and abroad, most recently in the traveling exhibition “Revoluciones del Mundo” originating in Havana, Cuba, and “The Artful Art of Drawing” at University of New England Art Gallery.
Shostak is the founder of life drawing sessions at Bates College. He is the lead curator for the upcoming groundbreaking exhibition “Starstruck: The Fine Art of Astrophotography,” an international juried exhibition opening in 2012, and has organized many other exhibitions. Shostak established and manages the museum’s internship program and developed the museum’s flagship outreach program, The Thousand Words Project, a visual literacy and language arts program.
The exhibition will open in the Atrium Art Gallery at Lewiston-Auburn College January 21 and continue through March 19.
