The University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College is pleased to announce that Shari B. Broder, Esq. has been hired to teach a course in labor relations. Broder has been a labor mediator, arbitrator and facilitator since 1992 and has resolved thousands of disputes for the public and private sectors. Serving as Chair of the Maine Board of Arbitration and Conciliation for the past 11 years, she chairs a three-person panel of labor arbitrators which hears both grievance and interest arbitration as well as fact finding cases. A skilled facilitator of interest-based bargaining, she also serves on the arbitration panels of the American Arbitration Association and Federal Mediation and Conciliation, in addition to others.

Broder will teach Employee Relations during USM LAC’s spring 2011 semester. The course reviews trends in legal, social, and economic aspects of U.S. labor-management relations. Topics include an historical overview of labor law, contract or personnel rule administration, grievance procedures, the negotiation process, and dispute resolution within the labor-management context. Broder is also familiar with the non-unionized employment sector through her earlier practice as a labor lawyer and civil litigator. “This is a fabulous opportunity for our students and our community,” said USM LAC Dean Joyce Gibson. “Attorney Broder is a highly skilled practitioner in the employment relations field and her expertise in the area of alternative dispute resolution will be of interest to many.” Other topics covered in the course include issues such as affirmative action, discrimination, fringe benefits, the job posting process, and discharges.
